On the Sunday night before Labor Day, at just past 9 p.m., the sky above the Ohio River becomes one of the hottest attractions in the Midwest.

The WEBN fireworks are a tradition for many families in Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati, but people from all over the Midwest flock to the shores or crowd the waters of the Ohio River on Sunday night to watch the show put on by Rozzi’s Famous Fireworks.

Since 1977, WEBN, a local rock radio station, sponsors 30 non-stop minutes of classic rock and fireworks.

Unsurprisingly, songs from AC/DC, Metallica and Queen almost always make the list, but “Purple Rain” by Prince is often played and accompanied by purple fireworks.

The drive to Newport, Ky., is an hour and a half straight up I-75 north. Watching the fireworks from the flood wall makes for a great view of the action and a free way to spend your Labor Day weekend.
