Thursday’s Bollywood Night marks a departure from the Student Activities Board’s usual programming, said director of multicultural affairs Kristyn Cherry.

“When deciding on this event, we wanted to program a fun and unique event, and do something that SAB really hasn’t done before,” Cherry said.

SAB sponsored and hosted the Bollywood event with the help of UK’s Indian Student Association, a partnership that took work through the summer and fall to pull together the festival, Cherry said.

“Most credit goes to SAB,” said ISA treasurer Raghauv Govindarajan. “ISA assisted in answering some of the culture appropriation issues for setting up the event.”

The night begins at 6 p.m. in the Student Center ballroom and will provide food, a themed photo booth, a henna artist and performances by a Bollywood dance group.

Govindarajan, an engineering graduate student, said ISA will have a stall and representatives at the event to provide more information about Indian culture.

“Any event held at the University of Kentucky is inclusive of all members of our campus community,” said ISA’s creative director Sai Yalla, a biology and political science sophomore. “We host these events especially so people come out and learn and appreciate Indian culture.”

Govindarajan encouraged students from all backgrounds to attend the event.

“We want to share our culture with everyone not just a particular demographic of students,” Govindarajan said. “Why not get a new experience? Get a touch of Indian authenticity, music and dance.”
