More mopeds come to campus

Many college students decide to leave their cars behind in favor of walking or riding bikes, but mopeds are also making an appearance across campus.

Mopeds start around $1,300 and can get anywhere from 80 to 105 miles per gallon, said James Jennings, owner of Fayette Moped and Lawn Mower Repair.

Unlike motorcycles, an extra license is not required to drive a moped. A standard Kentucky driver’s license is sufficient to take a moped on the road or around campus, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet website.

On-campus mopeds are regulated by campus Parking and Transportation Services. PTS spokeswoman Chrissie Tune said that $8 permits are required, either in sticker form or by a tag attached to the moped.

Owners have to put their moped in specific spots if they decide to take them to campus. Some of the best places to park them are by Memorial Hall and the Funkhouser Gillis buildings, Tune said.

Mopeds are not permitted to park in bicycle spots.

Henry William, an accounting freshman, said he enjoys his moped because it is fun to drive around campus. William also said it cuts down on commute times to and from classes.

“Most students are tired of getting tickets and getting cars towed, so they buy scooters,” Jennings said.
