Beta Upsilon Chi fraternity, also known as “Brothers Under Christ,” came to UK this year and is based solely on enriching the Christian lifestyle its members.

Agricultural biotechnology sophomore Jesse Matherly, a member of the fraternity, is working with the other members to make this new Greek chapter a success on campus.

Beta Upsilon Chi is the largest national Christian social fraternity in the United States, with 30 chapters ranging from Texas A&M to Yale, according to the fraternity’s website.

The fraternity operates like any other on campus except it includes a specific time for worship and “cell groups” of four to six members  who meet weekly for accountability sessions and Bible studies.

”(The fraternity is) a lifelong brotherhood of committed Christian men pursuing unity and brotherhood based on the common bond of Jesus Christ,” Matherly said.

Recently, the group has noticed more interest from students and has a total of 14 members.

“The aim is to collect Christian men, help develop them into leaders and send them out into the world to serve,” Matherly said.

Beta Upsilon Chi offers the classic experiences of Greek life including pledgeship, retreats, date parties and philanthropy, but all in a way that is centered around growing the faith of its members.

“We expect that Beta Upsilon Chi could reach some men who would not otherwise consider joining a social fraternity, as well as some men who would get involved in Greek life, but don’t feel like they fit with a traditional social fraternity,” Matherly said. “We want to create a brotherhood that is conducive to the growth of men’s faith, and also encourages men to get involved in the broader community here at UK.”
