Committee to discuss payout option

The issue of budget cuts and university funding has been a topic of much debate this year, and on Tuesday the Board of Trustees’ Investment Committee will look at the possibility of decreasing the money it takes out of endowments.

The committee will discuss changing its payout, which is the money it takes out of endowments each year to fund initiatives such as scholarships, Board of Trustees Chair Mira Ball said.

“I don’t think it’s because of budget issues,” Ball said. “I think it might be an answer to the downturn in endowments everywhere.”

Other topics at the meeting include a real estate discussion, a review of asset allocation and transition plan, a performance review and market update, and a performance review for overnight and short-term investments, according to the agenda.

Ball said the committee has a real estate discussion to spread awareness throughout the committee on what would happen if it put money into a real estate investment trust and to update board members on what is going on with the real estate market.

The meeting is at 9 a.m. in the Board Room on the 18th floor of Patterson Office Tower.
