Fans snatch up limited-edition Maker’s Mark bottles honoring coach

In Kentucky, basketball is king, but that’s not to say football and a quality bourbon whiskey don’t have a place in the heart of the Bluegrass.

The 18,000 limited edition Maker’s Mark bottles released by Maker’s Mark and Keeneland featuring UK football head coach Rich Brooks on the label sold out Thursday on its first day of release. Maker’s Mark spokesman

Alan Kirschenbaum said no more bottles would be released. Brooks will be signing the bottles at Keeneland on Friday.

“We’re honored that he wanted to be on the bottle,” Kirschenbaum said. “It’s a celebration to Coach Brooks bringing back the football program, and all the profits are going to a unique UK music extension program.”

Proceeds from the sales of the 18,000 bottles, which were distributed throughout the state, will be donated by Maker’s Mark to the extension program of the UK Symphony Orchestra. The program will bring the UK

Symphony Orchestra and the UK School of Music to public schools across the state.

Kirschenbaum said UK President Lee Todd created the entire idea, and it’s a great way to get people interested in music and the music program.

“It’s a great opportunity to show how athletics can help all parts of the university,” Kirschenbaum said. “It’s a great way to inspire young people to explore music.”

Maker’s Mark has also created limited edition bottles in the past for the famous UK basketball teams Rupp’s Runts and the Unforgettables, and former head coach Joe B. Hall. Those three bottles together led the way with matching grants to a $3 million research grant to the Markey Cancer Center.

The Rich Brooks bottle is hoping to raise another $200,000. Kirschenbaum said the favorable results are the product of good teamwork.

“It shows what can happen with the combination of three marquee brands: Maker’s Mark, Keeneland and UK.”
