Diversity and parking major issues for SG candidate

Win or lose, Colby Khoshreza said he sees the presidential election as an enjoyable experience that could give him the opportunity to make change in Student Government.

Khoshreza has worked with the Office of Student Diversity Engagement that put on “Diversity Dialogues” and “All Greek.” He said he wants to promote diversity, to address parking and other issues and to reform the student government.

Khoshreza has plans for a diversity board that would consist of members from different organizations on campus and would be representative of different cultures. The goals for the board would be to work on programming for multicultural organizations, educational workshops on diversity and a central go-to place for problem solving.“I think diversity is the acceptance of other people that may not be like you,” Khoshreza said. “I want to take the promotion of diversity to another level with more funding for multicultural organizations and festivals.”

Parking is an issue that Khoshreza has started working on by meeting with parking and transportation services at UK. Because there has been parking space elimination as a result of the construction of more buildings on campus, Khoshreza wants to encourage UK to find more parking spaces for students.

More shuttle routes on campus would mean more fees students have to pay, Khoshreza said. The SG budget is limited and could not pay for these services all year long and UK Parking and Transportation Services would have to pay for the extra routes.

“We need to expand shuttle services but we do not want to raise fees, we just have to be creative in finding new ways for transportation and parking,” he said.

Khoshreza would also like to improve University Health Service  by making sure that graduate students and their dependents have affordable health care. He said UK does not currently have health care for dependents of graduate or professional students.

“I think health care is an area that student government has not really addressed in the past and we need to get on the ball with that now,” Khoshreza said.

He wants to make it so the fee that students pay to get basic health care services at UK is expanded to resources that are more useful to students. The old basic health care services provided blood work and X-rays to students, Khoshreza said he would like to make those part of the basic health package again.
