No answer on Gillispie

UK President Lee Todd was unavailable for comment on the job status of UK men’s basketball coach Billy Gillispie, UK spokesman Jimmy Stanton said. The Cats’ rocky season ended Wednesday night with a loss at Notre Dame.

Todd was at the game in South Bend, Ind., but he was traveling Thursday afternoon and could not be reached, Stanton said.

Stanton was unsure when any announcement would be made regarding Gillispie.

Neither Todd nor Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart have said what Gillispie’s future may hold.

The Cats fell 77-67 in the National Invitation Tournament’s quarterfinal round to Notre Dame, leaving them with a 22-14 overall record and 8-8 Southeastern Conference.

With the Cats’ season over, attention shifts off the court to the futures of Gillispie, Patrick Patterson and Jodie Meeks. So far, Gillispie has dismissed rumors, instead opting to focus on the next game.

After the loss Wednesday, Gillispie said he didn’t know anything about his job security.

“You’re asking the wrong guy,” Gillispie said. “All I know is to go to work, coach, recruit. That’s what I do, that’s what I’ve done and that’s what I’ve continued to do.”

According to sophomore Patrick Patterson, Gillispie told his team after the game not to worry about him.

“He said, ‘Don’t worry about me, worry about the team. Worry about yourselves. Don’t be concerned about me, dont’ be concerned about the situation,’ ” Patterson said. “He told us to focus on us, focus on playing basketball and getting better for next year.”

Patterson said that was the extent to which Gillispie elaborated about his future after the game.
