Gossip Web site shuts down Thursday

When JuicyCampus.com launched in October 2007, gossip no longer had to rely on word-of-mouth.

Now, however, because of lack of revenue from advertisements, the uncensored, college gossip Web site shut down Thursday.

“Unfortunately, even with great traffic and strong user loyalty, a business can’t survive and grow without a steady stream of revenue to support it,” wrote the CEO and founder of JuicyCampus.com, Matt Ivester, in an e-mailed news release. “… Online ad revenue has plummeted and venture capital funding has dissolved.”

JuicyCampus was a Web site for college-age students to anonymously post comments on discussion boards. UK was one of the colleges included on the site.

According to a press release from 2007, the site allowed visitors to choose a specific school and can read, or contribute to, that campus’ gossip board.

The site re-launched in August 2008, and expanded from 63 campuses to 499 in just over a month, according to a press release in October 2008.

According to the official blog of JuicyCampus, the site’s leadership made the decision on Monday to shut down.

“JuicyCampus’ exponential growth outpaced our ability to muster the resources needed to survive this economic downturn,” Ivester said in the final press release.
