Kentucky women’s tennis defeated Penn State at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex 4-1 on Saturday.

The Cats came in hot and strong by winning the doubles matches (2-1) and securing that important first point.

Zoe Hammond struck first once again for the Wildcats, winning on court four 6-3, 6-1.

An impressive win for Lidia Gonzalez on court three came after the junior found herself down 4-0 in the second set. She made tough plays and kept the audience on their toes to force the tiebreaker before winning straight sets 6-2, 7-6 and 7-2.

Sophomore Ellie Myers, on court six, destroyed her opponent quickly with a two scores of 6-0 for a dreaded double bagel.

Myers spoke after the match about support from her teammates throughout the competition.

“Having my teammates on my side and having my back really helps between each point and makes the tough points easier,” she said.

The win saw the Wildcats improve to 3-0 overall and they will now travel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina for their next match against Charlotte and then either North Carolina or Oregon.
