A man accused of causing a crash that killed a University of Kentucky student took a plea deal on March 9.
Under the deal, Joseph Siami’s murder charge was amended to manslaughter for 10 years in prison, and two first-degree assault charges were amended to second-degree assault for five years in prison each.
Siami, 28, was indicted on several charges, including driving under the influence in a November 2021 crash that killed 20-year-old Chase Lawson, a sophomore neuroscience major at UK.
The Graymoor-Devondale Police Department responded to the crash on Nov. 27, 2021, where a BMW and a Honda crashed head-on at the intersection of LaGrange and North Hurstbourne Parkway in Louisville, Kentucky.
Siami was also charged with criminal mischief, which carried a five-year sentence, and operating a vehicle under the influence, which carried a 30-day sentence.
Siami was also charged with criminal mischief and operating a vehicle under the influence, and will run concurrently after his other sentences.
The sentences will run for an alleged total of 20 years.
The plea agreement resolves the case, but he awaits his formal sentencing hearing on May 22, 10 a.m.
