Kentucky men’s basketball (17-9, 8-5 SEC) fell in an 86-78 upset to Georgia (18-8, 6-7 SEC), with the Bulldogs pulling off only their fifth win ever at Rupp Arena and their first since 2009.
The Cats entered the night following a nine-point loss at No. 14 Florida on Saturday afternoon, still riding a slight wave of momentum, though, winning three of their last five total contests, two of which were against ranked opponents.
Georgia, on the other hand, entered Rupp Arena with only one win through its last five games, coming off a 94-78 loss at Oklahoma while sitting at 10th place in the SEC.
UK head coach Mark Pope rolled out the same starting lineup that has brought the Cats much greater success up to this point in the season: Otega Oweh, Denzel Aberdeen, Collin Chandler, Andrija Jelavic and Malachi Moreno.
Kentucky won the opening tip but was unsuccessful on its first try down after Moreno coughed up a turnover towards the tail end of the shot clock.
Georgia’s Blue Cain missed a 3-point field goal on the Bulldogs’ first try down, but ended up scoring the first points of the game just moments later, going 2-2 at the free-throw line following a foul call on Aberdeen.
Moreno then got Kentucky on the board with a dunk following an assist from Oweh.
At the first media timeout, Kentucky held a 7-2 advantage with three points coming from Oweh, two points coming from Moreno and two points coming from Aberdeen.
By the time there was 11:55 left in the first half, Oweh already had seven of UK’s 16 points, shooting 3-7 from the field and 1-2 from deep early on.
Halfway through the first half, Kentucky held an 18-15 lead, finding rhythm offensively, but leaving 3-point opportunities open on the defensive end, where Georgia was able to capitalize and keep the game close.
Pope was forced to call a timeout with 3:23 remaining in the first half after the Bulldogs mounted a 12-2 scoring run over the course of 2:20, leaving the Cats trailing 34-31.
Kentucky went into halftime down 39-34, shooting 13-29 (44.8%) from the field and 3-12 (25%) from deep, while leading the rebounding matchup 22-18.
Oweh finished the first half with 12 points while Chandler was the closest Wildcat with six points, shooting 2-2 from downtown.
Georgia’s Kanon Catchings opened the second half with a made 3-point field goal, but down on the other end, Oweh responded with a made 3-point field goal of his own.
From each side’s first possession, down to the first media timeout, it was a high-paced second half, as both teams combined for 25 points through the opening 4:14.
Oweh had 11 second-half points through that 4:14 stretch and was already at 23 total points on the night with a ton of clock still left to tick.
UK kept getting close to retaking the lead; however, every time it got just about there, the Bulldogs punched back on offense and stayed ahead.
Georgia was able to mount an 11-point, 66-55 lead with 10:55 remaining, courtesy of a 10-0 run over the span of 1:45.
Kentucky’s offense wasn’t malfunctioning. It was more so on the defensive end, where it allowed the Bulldogs to shoot over 54% from beyond the 3-point arch with just under five minutes to go in the game. Georgia was getting whatever it wanted.
Chandler did what he does best and that was drilling deep shots, keeping the deficit within reach, shooting 4-5 from deep through just 16 minutes in the second half.
With about 4:00 remaining, at a media timeout, UK was trailing 76-69 and needed to find its own offensive rhythm while attempting to limit the Bulldogs’ offensive efficiency as well, as time was not on its side.
Out of the timeout, Oweh threw down a thunderous jam and got the foul call, electrifying the Rupp Arena crowd to an extreme after making the one free-throw. At this point, UK was trailing 78-72 with 3:45 remaining.
Georgia’s Marcus Millender responded to Oweh’s slam by sinking a deep triple, extending the Bulldogs’ lead to nine, 81-72.
Following Millender’s deep ball, Aberdeen scored the game’s next six points and closed the deficit to 81-78 in favor of Georgia, keeping the Cats afloat for a little while longer.
From there, though, Georgia’s Somto Cyril made a crucial layup and got fouled with 0:43 remaining. He would go on to miss the one free throw. However, the made layup was enough to end the Cats’ chances.
Kentucky shot 27-59 (45.8%) from the field and 12-30 (40%) from deep while Oweh finished with a career-high tying 28 points. Chandler (18) and Aberdeen (14) were the closest UK scorers in double-digits.
Kentucky will return to action this Saturday, Feb. 21, taking a trip down to The Jungle to face the Auburn Tigers (14-11, 5-7 SEC). Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. EST and will air live on ESPN.
