Kentucky men’s tennis (7–2) delivered a dominant performance, sweeping a doubleheader against Northern Kentucky University (1–2) with two perfect matches.
The Wildcats set the tone early in doubles play. Jaden Weekes and Matt Rankin came out firing, earning a convincing 6-2 victory over Arnau Puig Juanpere and Mateus Ranciaro.
Martin Breysach and Mikael Arseneault followed with a 6-2 win of their own, taking down Joao Pimenta and Hector Salvador, clinching the doubles point for Kentucky.
The No. 35 duo of Jack Loutit and Eli Stephenson had their match halted at 5–3, as the doubles point was already secured.
Momentum carried straight into singles action, where the Wildcats were just as sharp. Stephenson led the charge with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory over Emilio Bravo.
Weekes continued his strong form, posting a 6-1, 6-3 win over Poulos to extend his singles winning streak to three matches.
“It feels great,” Stephenson said. “I’m blessed to have this opportunity to have this opportunity to be surrounded by my teammates and coaches and to be able to play this well so far, it’s, I mean, it’s been amazing.”
With a 3–0 lead already in hand, No. 30 Jack Loutit put the finishing touch on the match for Kentucky, earning a solid 6-3, 6-4 victory over Joao Pimenta.
Simultaneously, Arseneault added to the Wildcats’ tally with a hard-fought three-set win, defeating Ranciaro 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
Breysach was allowed to complete his match, which was converted into an eight-game pro set. He cruised to an 8-2 victory over Dugan Fowler. The match between Rankin and Juanpere was not played.
In the second half of the doubleheader, Kentucky kept its foot firmly on the gas.
Weekes and Rankin opened doubles play with a dominant 6-0 shutout over Fowler and Juanpere. The Wildcats were even sharper than in the morning session, completing a clean sweep in doubles.
Loutit and Stephenson followed with a 6-4 win over Pimenta and Ranciaro, Mikael Arseneault and Breysach added another 6-4 victory against Poulos and Bravo.
Singles play was just as one-sided. Stephenson remained unstoppable, delivering a double-bagel performance against Pimenta. Arseneault continued his strong day as well, cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 win to put Kentucky just one point away from sweeping both matches.
Loutit sealed the sweep for the Wildcats, putting the exclamation point on a dominant day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Salvador.
“Yeah, felt pretty good,” Kentucky head coach Cedric Kauffman said. “We could have focused in some few little moments. But, you know, playing for five hours is never easy for the guys, so I’m proud of them.”
Weekes, locked in a tightly contested battle with Bravo, had his match halted after winning the first set 7-6 (7-4). Breysach and Rankin did not begin their singles matches in the second contest.
“Yeah for starters, I think Illinois is a great team, coached well, has great players,” Stephenson said. They’re going to come in hungry for another win. I know our guys are excited, and we’re excited for the opportunity. More than anything, I think it’s going to be a great match overall.”
The Wildcats looked to carry their momentum into Sunday’s matchup against No. 25 Illinois but came up just short in a hard-fought 4-3 loss.
Kentucky came out strong in doubles play, setting the tone early. Charlelie Cosnet and Breysach dominated Hayden Jones and Will Mroz, cruising to a decisive 6-1 victory.
The momentum continued as Loutit and Stephenson delivered a statement win, knocking off the No. 37-ranked duo of Adam Jilly and Kenta Miyoshi, 6-2, to secure the doubles point for the Wildcats.
“Well, listen, I really am proud of the doubles,” Kauffman said. “They’re one of the best one two punch in the country, and we took them out there.”
Weekes and Arseneault were trailing 5-2 when their match was left unfinished with the doubles point already clinched.
The Wildcats stayed hot as singles play began, highlighted by an impressive upset from Stephenson, who took down No. 12 Kenta Miyoshi 6-1, 6-3. However, Kentucky’s momentum stalled shortly after. Weekes dropped a tough match to Will Mroz, falling 6-4, 6-2.
No. 73 Cosnet battled No. 124 Adam Jilly in a tightly contested match. After dropping the first set 6-2, Cosnet responded with a strong second set win, 7-5, but was unable to carry that momentum into the third, falling 6-2. Jilly’s win evened the team score at 2–2.
Team anchor Arseneault faced a challenging matchup against Jones. After a difficult first set loss, 6-0, Arseneault showed improvement in the second but ultimately fell 6-3, giving Illinois its first lead of the day.
Loutit delivered one of the matches of the afternoon in a grueling battle against No. 65 Debru. Loutit edged out the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-4), before narrowly dropping the second 7-5.
In a back-and-forth third set, Loutit finished strong, closing out the match with a 6-4 victory.
Despite Loutit’s clutch performance, it would not be enough to keep the Wildcats alive. Shortly after, Matt Rankin was unable to overcome Sasha Colleu, falling 6-3, 6-4, sealing the match for Illinois.
With the loss, Kentucky saw its 34-match home winning streak come to an end and suffered its second defeat of the season against the Fighting Illini.
“Yeah, right now we’re pissed, we’re upset, and then we’ll digest it,” Kauffman said. “And like I told them in the locker, we just got to get better and work harder, and start another streak.”
The Wildcats will enjoy a bye week before returning to action on Feb. 21, when they host their top rival, the University of Tennessee in their SEC opener, at 1 p.m. ET.
“Listen, yeah, we’re just trying to get ready every weekend, and the SEC is going to be just a gauntlet like any other sport in our confidence,” Kauffman said. “We’ll look at it every weekend, you know just one at a time, one match at a time, where we’re excited where we are today.”
