Kentucky softball’s Hailey Nutter earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors on Monday, after her dominant performance in the San Diego State Season Kickoff.
Nutter, residing from Barber Hills High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas, was a star and a champion from an early age, as she goes back to playing in her high school days.
She was a three-time district champion and a national champion with her 18U travel program, with her paving the path inside the circle.
In high school, she totaled 70 wins and a season-high 267 strikeouts her junior year, drawing national attention early.
The Wildcats got to Nutter quickly in the college commitment process and were lucky to have her commit on Oct. 5, 2023, and officially sign on Nov. 13, 2024.
Nutter would officially make her collegiate debut 14 months later in an opening season tournament on the west coast of San Diego, Calif.
She was nothing shy of perfect.
Twenty-one Loyola Chicago Rambler batters came to the plate, and Nutter sat down all twenty-one with ease.
She finished the game going all 7.0 innings, no hits, no walks and 14 strikeouts.
It was nothing short of a historic performance after achieving a perfect game in her first time pitching on the collegiate level.
With the help of the Wildcats at the bat, it was an easy and comfortable 7-0 dominating win for the freshman pitcher, her first win at that.
After tossing the 23rd no-hitter in Kentucky softball history, she was right back out the very next morning, where she was nothing short of stellar again.
This time against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the bats gave her all the help she needed, although maybe she could’ve taken all matters into her own hands.
Another dominating performance from Nutter and only having to go five strong innings, she was given enough run support to end the game via run rule, giving her back-to-back complete games in her first two games in college softball.
Nutter shut down the Golden Gophers in her five innings pitched with no walks, one hit-by-pitch and just two hits alongside eight strikeouts.
After logging 12.0 scoreless innings and 22 strikeouts, with a perfect game tagged on top of it, it was only fitting that Nutter was given her SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
Nutter played to the level of 2024 and 2025 SEC Pitcher of the Year from Tennessee, Karlyn Pickens, who put up quite a similar stat line.
Pickens went 14.0 innings, two complete game shutouts, while matching Nutter with 22 strikeouts but tallying seven walks in both games.
In Nutter’s two early starts in the season, she’s quickly establishing herself as a future star of Kentucky softball and one of the next up-and-coming stars of the SEC and even the NCAA as a whole.
Her game and stat line is already being compared to collegiate stars, and it will soon be noticed by the rest of the country, not just by the SEC.
After not playing against UC Santa Barbara, Nutter will prepare for a huge weekend to pitch against some of the country’s best teams in the Stanford Invitational.
She will likely pitch in games against Cal State Fullerton, No. 11 Stanford, Cal Poly, and two games versus No. 16 Oregon.
Nutter has a chance to prove more about herself on a bigger national circuit as the weekend at the Stanford Invitation, starting on Thursday, Feb. 13, where the Cats will take on on Cal State Fullerton (3-3) in Palo Alto, Calif. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. EST.
