The University of Kentucky’s Children’s Hospital received $50 million, the largest gift in UK Healthcare history, from its new partnership with the Golisano Foundation.
The Golisano Foundation is one of the largest private foundations in the United States, dedicated to creating a “better place for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” according to their website.
The Albert B. Chandler Hospital Complex’s Kentucky Children’s Hospital will also be renamed as the Golisano Children’s at UK, according to UKNow.
On Oct. 28, UK shared a livestream via email in which Tom Golisano, philanthropist and chairman of the board at Golisano Foundation, awarded six new hospitals a monetary gift to develop pediatric care.
These hospitals will be included in a partnership with the Golisano Children’s Alliance, an organization designed to expand services and collaboration for children’s health systems.
The hospitals in the alliance include:
- Golisano Children’s Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center
- Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital at SUNY Upstate Medical University
- Golisano Children’s Hospital of Lee Health
- John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital
- Connecticut Children’s Medical Center
- Penn State Health Children’s Hospital
- University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital
- University of Maryland Children’s Hospital
- University of Vermont Children’s Hospital
- WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital
“These 10 are the first 10, and I think there’s going to be more,” Golisano said.
Dr. Scottie Day, UK’s physician in chief, spoke at the Golisano announcement event in Rochester, New York, about how important healthcare improvements are to him, especially in Kentucky.
“It’s more about not just those individual hospitals, but it’s about all the children and all the families,” Day said.
According to UKNow, the Board of Trustees is meeting later today to approve the following affiliated specialty clinics and affiliate networks, including the now Golisano Children’s at UK, to be renamed after Golisano:
- The Richmond Road site will become Golisano Children’s at UK – Richmond Road
- The affiliate network will become Golisano Children’s at UK – Affiliate Network
“Can you imagine bringing all of these institutions together and what that will mean?” Day said. “It’s not just going to be across the University of Kentucky, it’s going to be across the Golisano Children’s Network.”
