A global Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage has disrupted access to several University of Kentucky platforms including Canvas, according to a campus-wide email sent on Monday, Oct. 20.
The email said AWS is working to resolve the issue and directed students to the AWS status page and UK’s outage site for updates.
“AWS provides behind-the-scenes cloud computing infrastructure to some of the world’s biggest organizations,” The Associated Press reported. “Its customers include government departments, universities and businesses.”
The outage has caused widespread connectivity issues for services that rely on AWS cloud infrastructure including Snapchat, Netflix, Disney+, Ring doorbell and more, according to the Associated Press.
The email advised UK instructors to remain flexible with students until systems are restored and encouraged students to reach out to instructors directly if experiencing issues.
As of 5:48 p.m. EST, AWS said systems are expected to be fixed within two hours and would provide further updates by 6:30 p.m.
EST. As of 6:53 p.m. EST, all services have been restored, though some systems will continue to process backlogged data over the next few hours, according to AWS.
