Kentucky men’s tennis had a strong showing at the ITA All-American Championships, with multiple Wildcats advancing deep into competition behind standout performances from Eli Stephenson and Jack Loutit.
Kentucky had eight players in action at the tournament, with half advancing to the qualifying round and three making it to the main draw.
Matthew Rankin and Nicolas Arseneault started the tournament ranked No. 1 in the pre-qualifying doubles draw. They took their first match 6-4, 7-5 in a competitive battle against Anthony Wright and Roan Jones. In their second match, they squared off with No. 9 Vit Kalina and Matic Kriznik.
Rankin and Arseneault faced off with No. 8 Oliver Ojakaar and Sebastian Eriksson in the first round of the qualifying round, falling 6-4, 7-5 in straight sets.
Stephenson and Loutit started ranked No. 3 to begin the round, but the experienced duo fell 7-5, 6-4 against Sean Daryabeigi and Lucas Silva da Andrade, ending the Wildcats’ doubles run.
Stephenson might have fallen short in doubles, but stole the show in singles, winning five matches in four days. He had to claw his way into the main draw, starting with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Alejandro Jacome.
In the next round, Stephenson started with a 6-3, 6-0 upset over No. 21 Ondrej Horak. He followed up by facing off with No. 16 Niels Ratiu, pulling off his second upset of the day, taking the win 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.
Stephenson wouldn’t be alone in his impressive play, with Charlelie Cosnet and Mikael Arseneault following right behind him.
On day one, both Cosnet and M. Arseneault faced tough matches. Cosnet prevailed over Leo Lopez Linquet in a close battle, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3. Arseneault dropped the first set to Calum Jestin, 6-1, but rallied to win the next two sets, 6-2, 6-1.
M. Arseneault continued his great play into the following round, getting the upset win over No. 1 Filip Gustafsson 7-6(7-5), 6-3.
He was unable to continue his impressive winning start, falling in the Round of 64 to No. 21 Gabriele Vulpitta 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, ending his run in the tournament.
Cosnet started the next round with an impressive upset as well, taking down No. 11 Chris Xu 6-4, 6-2. He followed it up by playing in an all-out war against Lincoln Battle, pulling off a hard-fought 6-1, 6-7(2-7), 7-6(8-10) win.
In the first round of the qualifying draw, No. 13 N. Arseneault took an upset loss against Romain Gales 6-4, 6-7(7-3), 4-6. Arseneault lost his following match as well, 6-3, 2-6, 1-6 against Orel Kimchi, ending his time in the tournament.
Cosnet looked to continue competitive play but took a rough loss against No. 17 Andrew Delgado 6-1, 6-1. Cosnet recovered, picking up a 6-4, 6-4 win over Timofey Stepanov, although it was still not enough to qualify for the main draw, ending his impressive run.
Stephenson remained unstoppable, following up his win over Ratiu with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 17 Tiago Silva. Stephenson continued his phenomenal play into the final round of the qualifying draw, pulling yet another upset, taking down Roger Ferra Pascual 7-6(7-5), 1-6, joining teammates No. 29 Antoine Ghibaudo and No. 28 Loutit.
Ghibaudo’s run in the tournament turned into a short one, going down to Keegan Rice 7-6(7-3), 2-6, ending his time in action.
Stephenson matched up with No. 7 Dylan Dietrich. Despite a 6-4, 6-2 loss, Stephenson’s run in the tournament had not ended. Stephenson, now competing in the consolation round of the main singles draw, started with a 6-3, 6-4 win over William Manning.
In the Round of 32, Stephenson got revenge for Ghibaudo, taking down Rice 7-6(10-8), 6-0. After defeating Rice, Stephenson was matched up with Jakub Vrba in the qualifying round of the consolation draw.
The two battled in an incredible match. Stephenson fell 6-7(3-7), 7-6(9-7), 4-6, ending his Cinderella story run.
With Stephenson’s loss, Loutit was the only Wildcat left. Loutit started the main draw with a 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Alex Okonkwo. In the Round of 32, Loutit matched up with Lucas Brown, taking back-to-back come-from-behind wins. After dropping the first set 5-7, he took the next two 6-0, 6-3.
Loutit followed up his win over Brown by taking down Alex Chang 6-1, 6-3. In his next match, he claimed an automatic win against Santiago Giamichelle, who was unable to compete due to injury.
In the quarterfinal round, Loutit upset No. 9 Martin Borisiouk 7-6(7-1), 6-2. In the semifinals, Loutit was matched up with No. 4 Kenta Miyoshi. After dropping the first set 6-2, Loutit was forced to retire due to injury during the second set, ending his time in the tournament.
The Wildcats will be back in action Oct. 9 when they travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to compete in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships. The tournament will take place at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
