The University of Kentucky is monitoring federal budget negotiations in anticipation of a possible government shutdown at midnight, according to a campus-wide email from UK President Eli Capilouto.
The email, sent on Tuesday, Sept. 30, said the shutdown would likely cause minimal disruption to the university.
“A government shutdown occurs when Congress fails to pass funding for some or all agencies, which can’t spend money that hasn’t been approved by lawmakers,” according to a CBS article.
This would be the first government shutdown in almost seven years, according to the Associated Press.
Federal student aid and other critical services are expected to continue, though prolonged delays could affect FAFSA processing and the submission of new federal grant proposals, according to Capilouto.
“Federal funding for approved student aid and other critical functions across the university should continue to operate in a close-to-normal manner,” Capilouto said in the email. “We will continue to monitor any potential impacts on FAFSA processing.”
UK Healthcare, including UK King’s Daughters Center and UK St. Claire, would not be impacted by the shutdown, according to the email.
