One public university or college in Kentucky will receive a $2 million grant to support innovative energy projects, according to a press release sent via email from the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet.
The grant aims to enhance energy resilience during storms or floods, boost energy efficiency and reduce costs through new technologies, the press release said.Ā
Funded by the United States Department of Energy and the State Energy Program, the grant is part of the Kentucky Resilient Microgrid Program and aligns with Gov. Andy Beshearās mission to strengthen Kentuckyās energy infrastructure.Ā
āWeāve seen a lot of severe weather in Kentucky that can affect power and utilities. Weāre keeping our commitment to help our communities become more resilient,ā Beshear said. āOur public universities and colleges, which already serve as leaders in our communities, are uniquely situated to develop innovative solutions to maintain power during disruptions.ā
A public webinar will be held on Sept. 4, 2025, to provide potential applicants with an overview of the program and answer questions about the application process.
Jay Blanton, University of Kentuckyās spokesperson, said UK is considering applying for the grant.
āWe know about it and are evaluating,ā Blanton said.
