Kentucky women’s tennis hit the road to take on South Carolina in SEC play and suffered a clean sweep.
Kentucky looked to start hot in doubles play, but would find no success. The ace team of Lizzy Stevens and Ellie Eades looked to get the Wildcats rolling, but would suffer a rough loss 6-2. Ellie Myers and Tess Bucher battled back, but would fall 6-3 in their match.
Asunción Jadue and Julia Zhu looked to keep their impressive seasons going, but would be stopped early with the Gamecocks already up 2-0 in doubles securing the bracket. South Carolina would head into singles play with a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats looked to recover after doubles match, but would face their most challenging play so far this season.
All singles matches were going at once, putting the pressure on everyone. Bucher looked to keep her strong year going, but would suffer a rough loss 6-1, 6-1. Myers would not fare any better, taking the loss 6-1, 6-0, leaving the Gamecocks one win away from victory.
Singles stars Zoe Hammond and Zhu would look to will Kentucky back to get the win, but were not able to finish the job. After both split their first two sets, they would each look to pick up the win, but would be stopped early after Jadue lost in her match 6-4, 6-3.
Stevens’ match was stopped as well due to the clean Sweep from USC after going through a grueling first set, barely going down 7-6. Her match was stopped as she was down 3-0 in the second set looking to comeback.
With the loss, Kentucky now falls to 6-7 on the season and 0-5 in conference play this year. It will look for its first SEC win of the year on the road at Oklahoma.
Kentucky will be back in action on March. 14, taking on the Sooners at 6 p.m. ET. The matches will take place at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
