Kentucky women’s tennis hit the road in SEC play and suffered back-to-back losses against LSU and Ole Miss.
Up first, Kentucky lost in a gritty back-and-forth battle, losing both singles and doubles brackets with Louisiana State (LSU), taking the win 4-2.
The Wildcats had the most challenging doubles play this season. First, Lizzy Stevens and Ellie Eades went down 6-1 against Tilwith Di Girolami and No. 22 Anita Sahdiieva, giving that team its first doubles loss this season and Stevens her first doubles loss of the season.
Julia Zhu and Asunción Jadue looked to continue their incredible seasons, but would go down 6-3. Match three would go unfinished.
Down 1-0, Kentucky would look to comeback against the Tigers, but would not achieve its goal.
Zoe Hammond would look to continue her great play after a huge win against Tennessee, but would suffer a rough loss, being defeated 6-2, 6-0. Stevens, looking to pick up a singles win after a painful doubles loss, would go down again 6-2, 6-2 against No. 72 Di Girolami.
With a 3-0 lead, LSU looked to get the clean sweep over Kentucky, but was denied by standout freshman Tess Bucher, who picked up the win 6-4, 6-2. Zhu continued to lead the comeback, taking the win 6-3, 6-2.
Ellie Myers looked to keep Kentucky’s hope alive for the comeback win, but would suffer a close loss after putting on a great performance. Losing the first set 6-1, she looked to bounce back in a big way and would do just that, taking the second 6-6 and forcing a tiebreaker.
Myers would end up losing 7-2 in the tiebreaker. Myers’ loss to Gaby Rivera, No. 121, secured the win for LSU. Eades’ singles match would go unfinished with the loss already determined.
Just days later, Kentucky once again looked to pick up its first SEC win of the season, but would go home after a rough loss against Ole Miss 4-0.
The Wildcats started strong with a doubles win from Stevens and Eades 6-2, taking down Anaelle Leclercq-Ficher and No. 98 Ludmila Kareisova.
Kentucky would look to keep going strong after losses from Zhu and Jadue 6-3 against Emily Welker and Brooklyn Olson as well as the team of Hammond and Bucher going down 6-3 against Andrea Nova and Lucie Petruzelova. Ole Miss would take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Eades would look to keep her winning efforts going, but would take the rough loss against Alice Soulie 6-2, 6-4, extending Ole Miss to a 2-0 lead.
After a hard-fought first set barely going down 7-6, 7-3 in the tiebreaker, Bucher would have a rough loss in her second set, going down 6-1 against Rachel Krzyzak, making the Wildcats one loss away from defeat.
Stevens would look to keep the Wildcats alive against Kareisova, but would fall just short of her goal. After going down 6-4 in the first set, she would come back with a fire in her, taking the second set 6-1 taking it to set three. Heading into set three, both were looking for a big win for their respective teams. Kareisova would take the win for Ole Miss with a 6-3 win in the third set, sealing the Rebels’ win.
With the loss, Kentucky now falls to 0-3 in SEC play this year. They will look for a strong recovery against Georgia.
Kentucky will be back in action on March. 7, taking on the Bulldogs at 1 p.m. ET. The matches will take place at the Hillary J. Boone Complex.
