“We’re built for March.”

Those four words were spoken quite often by Hall of Famer John Calipari ahead of the postseason and March Madness.

However, when seniors at the University of Kentucky graduate in May, they will be walking across the stage having seen just one NCAA Tournament win during their four years in Lexington.

Included in that group is me — a student who was excited to experience the thrill of March at one of the best college basketball programs in history.

But I, as well as the rest of the seniors on campus, do not know that thrill. Instead, we look at the students at Saint Peter’s, Kansas State and Oakland, and can only long to know what that kind of excitement in March felt like.

It’s disappointing and heartbreaking to see the talent and potential this roster possessed for a thrilling road to the Final Four. It was more than possible. But now, none of BBN gets to experience that road and neither do the freshmen who could have led that journey.

Reflecting on these past four years, yes, it’s upsetting, but at the end of the day, the most fitting word is “unacceptable.”

After Calipari made it a point to blame his own team after the loss to Oakland, the problem now shines brighter than ever in the coach that has now successfully prepared four different rosters to fumble in March.

Possessing a group of guys this year that was arguably the best group Calipari has had since 2015, there was absolutely no reason for the season to end in the worst possible way.

And it was, in fact, the worst possible way with zero wins in the SEC Tournament and zero wins in the NCAA Tournament.

Again, as a senior, there are so many words to be said, but also no words to describe the frustration we feel and Calipari’s words after the loss did not exactly ease that frustration either.

“Let me, first of all, tell you Oakland played a heck of a game,” Calipari said. “They made some unbelievable shots. We were basically in a box and one late… But this one hit me hard for them, because again, I just thought I had a team that could do some stuff.”

Mistake number one: Blaming teenagers and taking no accountability.

“So, we’ve gotta figure out who’s coming back and who’s not,” he said. “We got this transfer stuff going on. We may not need it. We have an unbelievable group coming in that I feel really good about. We add some guys, and they stay.”

Mistake number two: Falling back on the “just wait for next year” excuse, which has been exhausted with this fan base. This season was the last straw.

But unfortunately for UK seniors, there are no more chances. This year was it and it saddens me to be leaving Lexington not knowing how fun March Madness could have been.

No matter what the future holds for this basketball program and whether or not that future includes Calipari, there is still a chance for excitement for these fans.

But not for this year’s graduating class. And not for me.

He had every right to put that on the players. You cannot coach effort and that was HEAVILY lacking in that game. So as much as you and others want to bash the man for saying what he said, he is right.
