No. 16 UK baseball clinched its first series victory over Vanderbilt since 2009 with a 7-4 win on Saturday afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium. The Cats are now 21-7 and 7-1 atop the SEC East standings and can do no worse than being tied for the overall conference lead heading into Sunday.

The first three innings were once again kind to the Cats but on Saturday, the Commodores made the Cats work. The Dores had four hard hit balls in the second inning, but only one resulted in a hit and in the third Vandy had guys on second and third with one out but the Cats kept VU off the board.

Junior lefty Zach Logue was the reason that Vandy was unable to get anything going offensively and after being forced to work early, Logue settled down and put forth a career outing. Logue threw a career-long eight innings allowing just one run, six hits while tying a career-high with seven strikeouts.

Able to keep Vanderbilt off the board and preventing the Commodores from grabbing an early lead, the Cats capitalized just as they did on Friday night.

For the second straight game UK put up a crooked number in the third inning that started after Marcus Carson and Evan White found themselves on second and third with one out. A Zach Reks ground out brought home Carson to start the scoring, and then a single by Luke Becker and a triple by Riley Mahan had the Cats up 3-0. Then with the bases loaded, Kole Cottam singled home a pair of runs to put the Cats up 5-0 through three innings.

The Cats added two more runs in the fifth after Tristan Pompey and Tyler Marshall each singled home a run and Vanderbilt scored its lone run courtesy of a pair Jeren Kendall home runs in the eighth and ninth.

With the opportunity to sweep one of the top programs in the country and solidify itself atop the SEC standings on Sunday, UK is in a position to make even more noise on the national stage than it already has. First pitch for the series finale is set for 1 p.m. with Justin Lewis going for his fifth win of the year.
