Runners and joggers sweated and gasped through a 1K dash on Wednesday night to raise money and awareness for the Children’s Miracle Network.

The Phi Delta Epsilon medical fraternity said they hosted the Rush and Rally 1K on the Bowman’s Den lawn, “for the kids.”

“More than 10 million kids enter a children’s hospital like Kentucky Children’s Hospital across North America every year,” the network’s website said. “To provide the best care for kids, children’s hospitals rely on donations and community support, as Medicaid and insurance programs do not fully cover the cost of care.”

Local musicians “io Ravine” performed as a pre-race event for the runners and spectators. The crowd was also entertained with a short speech from Children’s Miracle Network representative.

Madi Ginn, Secretay for Phi Delta Epsilon, said the race was only a taste of their future philanthropy.

“While we do this rush and rally annually, this is actually a precursor for our main event in the Spring,” Ginn said. “We’ll be hosting an Anatomy Fashion Show, where people dress up in Spandex suits and model all different types of physical deformities and anatomical structures. It’ll be the second year of us doing that. We hope that this event will help raise awareness for that show in the Spring. It’s all about the kids.”

With over 20 racers signed up for the 1K, the fraternity was able to raise awareness for the fashion show and was also able to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network.
