Kentucky football (2-5, 0-5 SEC) was demolished by No. 17 Tennessee (6-2, 2-2 SEC) by a score of 56-34.
The loss made it 10 straight SEC losses and extended its conference losing streak at Kroger Field to over 760 days.
Both teams entered the matchup on a loss as the Wildcats fell 16-13 in overtime to then No. 20 Texas and the Vols fell to then No. 6 Alabama 37-20.
Kentucky won the toss and chose to defer to the second half, which meant Tennessee took the field on offense first.
Following the early score, both teams went three-and-out on their next offensive series’.
In Kentucky’s ensuing possession, Cutter Boley attempted a pass that was batted down and intercepted by Edrees Farooq for a 45-yard pick six that boosted the Vols lead to 14-0.
With the lead now cut in half, both teams exchanged punts once again on offense, but the Vols got going again as another deep connection from Joey Aguilar to Chris Brazzell II gave way to a 1-yard touchdown run by Star Thomas.
On the ensuing possession for Kentucky, Hardley Gilmore IV caught a third-down pass and ran it to the UK 43 before fumbling it. Chaos ensued after this as the ball stayed on the ground and was recovered by Ja’Mori Maclin who ran it and fumbled it again before it landed in the hands of Tennessee’s Jadon Perlotte at the UK 12.
The first quarter ended on the first play of the Vols drive, and DeSean Bishop punched it in on fourth-and-goal to extend the Tennessee lead to 28-7.
With the deficit now trimmed to 14, Kentucky held the Vols offense to a three-and-out to give the ball back to Boley and Co. with a chance to cut the lead to a single score.
Kentucky had a prime opportunity to head to the locker room within a score, but Tennessee drove the ball down the field in a blink and put up a 13-yard touchdown to jump back out to a 35-21 lead at the break.
The Wildcats could not get the offense going out of half which gave the ball back to the Vols offense in what became a critical defensive possession for Kentucky.
Kentucky picked up three first downs on its next offensive drive, but Jacob Kauwe missed a 55 yarder to keep deficit at 21.
Boley slimmed the lead to 27-49 with another connection to DJ Miller, this time from 28-yards out.
The Vols kept the offense rolling with a 56-yard connection from Aguilar to Braylon Stanley that ended the third quarter.
DeSean Bishop capped off the drive with a 5-yard score that extended the lead to 56-27.
The Wildcats put up a touchdown on their next drive as Boley connected with J.J. Hester for the 7-yard score that made the score 56-34.
After the touchdown, Tennessee kept the ball until the end of the ballgame.
Following the loss, Kentucky will hit the road to take on Auburn on Saturday, Nov. 1 with kickoff set for 7:30.
