Sorority women packed into the Christian Student Fellowship building Wednesday night to rehearse dance moves in preparation for this year’s Greek Sing competition.

Teams have been practicing for months for the annual dance contest and charity event sponsored by Chi Omega sorority and Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

All proceeds will go to one child in the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Chi Omega’s national charity. Participants get to meet the child after the competition.

Some sororities have been practicing since as early as October, said Benton Hupman, the Greek Sing chair for Phi Delt. Fraternities typically prepare for a few weeks or a month, he said.

“We’re doing everything we can to win,” said Mary Alice Stewart, a sophomore in Alpha Delta Pi sorority. “We really like our theme and we really like our dance.”

ADPi was crowned as the sorority winner last year and Beta Theta Pi won in the fraternity category. The sorority’s theme was “Transportation,” which featured cardboard cutout props of cars, boats and planes, and featured songs like, “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line.

Stewart declined to share her sorority’s theme this year. It is common tradition that Greek organizations keep their themes secret until the competition day.

Stewart said she loved spending time with her sorority during practices and preparing for the performance, but the feeling after the competition may have been the best part.

“After we walked off stage, my adrenaline was so high, my heart was beating so fast,” Stewart said. “It was an awesome feeling.”

Stewart and her sorority sisters, along with every other fraternity and sorority, will spend the weekend together, readying themselves for their time on stage.

“They put a lot of effort into this and it’s awesome,” Hupman said. “That’s what makes it so great.”

Last year, Greek Sing raised $135,000 for Make-A-Wish, but this year they hope to raise $150,000, he said.

Greek Sing is at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Memorial Coliseum. Tickets are $15 if bought in advance and can be bought at the Student Center ticket office, but they will be $20 at the door.
