The University of Kentucky Police Department (UKPD) addressed additional implementations targeting safety efforts on campus, including a campus-wide safety campaign.
On Friday, August 15, an email sent by Chief of Police Joe Monroe said the campaign, called Wildcat Ready, was designed to help students “stay informed, be prepared and take action.”
According to the email, UKPD will add several new safety enhancements this year, including:
- Deployment of a mobile police unit on North Campus, near the Good Samaritan Hospital
- Additional residence hall security including cameras and access controls
- Installation of permanent lighting along Winslow and Scott Street
- Implementation of a first responder drone program for emergency response
- Introduction of SafeZone, a new campus safety app
“We know that your success depends on feeling secure, supported and prepared during your time here at UK,” Monroe wrote.
According to the email, UKPD will continue implementing several safety enhancements from last year, including:
- Increased UKPD patrols during late-night hours
- Added temporary lighting and evaluated areas for permanent fixtures
- Additional security measures in garages and residence halls
- Partnerships with the City of Lexington and local businesses to improve off-campus safety
“Safety is a shared responsibility, and we want every wildcat to feel empowered and equipped with the tools to enhance your personal safety,” Monroe wrote.
To stay informed on campus, the Emergency Response Guide explains protocol for emergency scenarios. According to the email, the UK Alert systems automatically enroll students to receive alerts via email. Students can update their preferences on myUK to receive alerts via phone calls and texts.
