Kentucky STUNT began its third varsity season on Saturday, defeating No. 6 Ashland University 20-10 in the first part of a double header.
The Cats started off strong, ending the first quarter with a 4-0 lead, having earned the highest amount of points possible for that quarter.
Both teams earned three points in the second quarter, allowing the Wildcats to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.
Kentucky stayed reliable into the third quarter, only allowing Ashland to score two points, advancing the score 10-5.
The Wildcats then sealed the victory, scoring an impressive 10 points in the fourth quarter.
In the second game of the day, the STUNT team finished with a 17-13 loss against No. 1 Alma.
In the first quarter Alma took the lead against the Cats with a score of 4-2 after winning possession off the coin toss.
In the first quarter there was an injury with Kentucky’s Makena Carter, resulting in a forfeit of routine No. 8, giving the Scots a point.
Kentucky got back into it in the second quarter, earning three points to just two for Alma, but by halftime the Scots were up 6-5.
The third quarter began with Kentucky leading in points. The Cats and Scots alternated winning points but Alma took the quarter 9-8 after two consecutive ties in points.
The final quarter started with Kentucky winning two points and Alma one to tie the game 10-10, but the Cats decided to not compete in two of the three routines to give Alma some pressure.
“I wanted to put some of the pressure on them, so they knew with us not going out there they had to execute,” Head coach Blair Bergmann said.
At the end of the fourth quarter Alma won three points and the Scots led 13-11, finishing with four points to two for Kentucky to end the game and win against the Cats 17-13.
Following the second game, Bergmann said that he wants to see more with his team’s performance, saying that the Cats have great potential for the upcoming season.
“Alma is a great team,” he said. “They are one of the best teams in the country. I think this shows how resilient as a team we are and how much potential we have. I think we just need to improve and bring out our full potential.”
Kentucky continues its season on Feb. 16, facing Texas and Oklahoma Baptist in the Dallas Baptist Tournament down in Texas.
