Almost two years since Sophia Rosing verbally and physically assaulted fellow UK student Kylah Spring, Rosing has pleaded guilty.
She pleaded guilty to four counts of fourth-degree assault, one count of disorderly conduct and one count of alcohol intoxication.
Rosing was originally facing charges of “1st and 2nd offenses; assault 3rd degree – police officer or prob officer; assault 4th degree (no visible injury) and disorderly conduct, 2nd degree,” the Kernel previously reported.
Rosing’s lawyer, Fred Peters, said he has pushed for a mediation date for six months.
According to the Supreme Court of Kentucky, mediation allows the defendant and plaintiff an “opportunity to resolve their issues” through a relatively informal process mediated by a third party.
“We finally got a mediation and a convenient date with the mediator. We had to work through everybody’s schedules: two lawyers, the mediators, the victim and my client. Monday was the first date they could do,” Peters said.
According to Peters, in Fayette County, when a party chooses to do mediation and can settle a date, they will take a guilty plea on the day of mediation.
Rosing was facing felony charges of fourth-degree assault and third-degree assault of a police officer.
“We had mediation, there were talks, apologies made, feelings expressed about how much they were hurt by what was said, and they got rid of the felony charge that made it into a misdemeanor,” Peters said. This drop in charges was able to happen due to nobody being seriously injured.
After the assault, no one was medically treated or consulted a doctor, according to Peters, though Rosing “bit a couple people on the hand and she pushed and shoved Kylah Spring during the altercation.”
Rosing’s sentencing will take place Oct. 17 at the Fayette County Circuit Court House.
