Zombies invade Campus for Halloween performance
October 28, 2009
If you happen to stumble upon a couple of zombies while walking to class on Wednesday, don’t be afraid. It’s just the Skitty Cats.
The Skitty Cats are an improvisational theater group started by UK theater majors last year. The group will be doing an improvised theater performance outside the White Hall classroom building on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to celebrate Halloween.
The event, called the Zombie Walk, will have around 30 actors portraying Zombies or Zombie handlers walking around and interacting with students as they make their way to and from class.
“Our plan is to get zombie-fied out in front of the White Hall area,†said Elliot Richards, a theater major and member of the Skitty Cats. “Some people who don’t want to get into the full makeup will be leading the zombies around, playing skits with the zombies and having the zombies interact with the audience.â€
Richards said even though the zombies will be in the area for three hours, they will be in character the entire time, creating an entertaining and interactive show for students without a planned script.
“We’re just kind of going and pretending to be zombies,†Richards said. “Yes, we are messing around, but we are also interested in real theater. We are going to stay in character. We are going to be real zombies as much as we can, without actually eating people.
“We will also have a few people who will not be doing zombies, but they will be walking around with zombies on leashes. Another member of our group is going to take her zombie boyfriend for lunch.â€
The Zombie Walk was performed last year in the student center, when a bunch of actors in zombie outfits stormed the student center food court and pretended to mug an actor with the group.
“We had some people who would come up with us and take pictures, some people were trying to feed us lunch and stuff like that, a lot of interaction with people,†Richard said. “It’s amazing how much people seem to like zombies.â€
After the first Zombie Walk last year, Richard said the Skitty Cats had big plans for other similar performances on campus throughout the year, but the group lost focus and it wasn’t until this semester that involvement got better.
Richards said as of now nothing is solidified as to what other performances they will have during the semester, but they are planning a mock original Thanksgiving Feast at different location on campus right before the Thanksgiving break.
“We are theater majors and we are really creative,†he said. “We’re hoping to get something started. Our goal is to have one per month.â€
This year the targeted audience is the students coming out of the buildings during class changes, but if the weather is bad the group will move indoors, Richards said.
“We’re trying to stay out of the buildings. But if it’s raining, while the classes are changing we would be in White Hall, probably head to the student center, trying to get as much exposure as possible,†Richards said.
The Skitty Cats improvisational theater group will also host a zombie fashion show in the student center on Thursday between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Richards encourages students to come and check out the zombie themed theater performances.
“It’s zombies,†he said. “What’s not to love about a bunch of people being zombies?â€
