Healthy food options readily available on campus
February 18, 2009
Blazer Café, Ovid’s, Commons Market. All words that, to the average person, mean nothing, but to a UK freshman it means breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Campus Dining Services is something that freshmen living on campus are very familiar with. Many freshmen complain about not having enough variety with the services provided by campus dining. They claim that the food provided is not healthy and in turn contributes to the dreaded ‘Freshman 15.’ However, if the distraught freshman were to take a step back and evaluate the options laid out in front of them, they would realize that UK really does offer healthy options for day-to-day meals in dining areas such as Ovid’s and, yes, even Commons Market.
Ovid’s offers a wide variety of salads and vegetarian lasagna for the herbivores as well as sliced turkey wraps and grilled chicken for the carnivores on campus. Ovid’s also carries bottled water, low-fat yogurt with granola and various fruits. Ovid’s is a healthy and quick option for students on the go.
Commons Market also offers healthy options for students living predominantly on South Campus. There is a salad bar, a fruit stand and omelets available for consumption. On certain nights of the week, Commons Market serves stir fry with a mix of meats and vegetables.
Along with all of the healthy options offered by UK Dining Services, they also do their part for the community. Dining Services purchases its produce from local farmers. By doing so, it helps keep the economy of our Commonwealth thriving.
To the health conscious freshmen out there looking for a hearty wrap to ease their bad food blues: Have no fear, UK Dining Services is here!
