Block Party Raises Money for DanceBlue

By Luke Glaser

One month from the actual marathon, UK is already putting the “dance” in DanceBlue.

For the second year running, South Limestone will once again be home to the ‘80s Block Party, a fundraiser benefiting UK’s DanceBlue. Two Keys, Tin Roof and the Paddock will all be pulling out their neon lights and Michael Jackson soundtracks in anticipation for the event. “We did it last year, and it was so successful that we thought we’d try it again” said Blake Traylor, Sigma Chi’s DanceBlue coordinator who is helping stage the event. “It’s unlike any other fundraiser. You get into bars cheaper, hang out with all your friends, and all proceeds go to DanceBlue.”

One ticket purchased at $5 will gain you entry into all 3 bars, with all proceeds going to benefit DanceBlue. Two Keys will have an ‘80s DJ and video show, Tin Roof will be featuring an ‘80s band and the Paddock will be playing all that familiar ‘80s music we know and love.

“It’s one of the first weekends back in school” Traylor said. “It’s a chance to catch up with everybody and raise money for a good cause.”

Rock Daniels, a local realtor who helped Blake coordinate the event, got the idea of an ‘80s party from a now defunct downtown bar called The Dame.

“It used to be packed on weekends, and crazy” Daniels said. That popularity has shifted to South Limestone, where students wearing leg warmers and Beastie Boys T-shirts packed the house last year. “It was awesome,” said sophomore marketing major David Steele. “I wasn’t even alive for most of the ‘80s and it made me miss ‘80s music.”

Tickets for the event must be purchased in advance. They can be bought at Mad Mushroom tomorrow night from 9:30 p.m. to midnight. The actual block party begins at 10 p.m. and goes until 2 a.m.

So brush up on the Thriller dance and get to South Limestone tonight for good times, good dancing, and of course, a great cause.
