20 years later, ISU’s Fred Hoiberg meets UK again

Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg knows something about playing UK in the NCAA Tournament.

Twenty years ago, Hoiberg was a player for Iowa State when the Cyclones lost to the Wildcats, 106-98, in a Round of 32 game.

“It was a heck of a game, I remember that,” Hoiberg said. “I remember Johnny Orr yelling at Rick Pitino to get back in the coaches box the entire game. It was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever been a part of.”

Hoiberg didn’t play all that well — he scored two points in 34 minutes and fouled out, which he said was the only time in his college career he had done so —but remembered who did.

“Mashburn was unstoppable that game,” Hoiberg said, and he’s right. Jamal Mashburn scored 27 points with nine rebounds in 28 minutes.

He also remembered what followed that 1992 game.

The “20 years later” storyline.

“To be a part of that whole process of what happened in the next two games, where you see that shot Laettner hits at the beginning of almost every broadcast in the NCAA, and we were part of that,” Hoiberg said.
