A pair of home runs was enough to propel UK softball (13-15) past Western Kentucky (19-11) 4-2 Wednesday night in Bowling Green.

The Cats struck first in the top of the second inning with a home run from the bat of sophomore Ginny Carroll.

Carroll’s homer scored junior Alice O’Brien, who reached based after being hit by a pitch.

Two innings later, UK softball head coach Rachel Lawson’s club got on the scoreboard again.

Junior Kara Dill hit her first career homer over the right field fence to lead off the inning and put the Cats ahead 3-0.

Following Dill’s at-bat, freshman Griffin Joiner reached base on a two-out single and scored thereafter on a double by sophomore Lauren Cumbess.

Senior pitcher Rachel Riley and the UK defense were tested once again in the late inning when the Hilltoppers were able to drive in a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Up 4-0, Riley gave up a one-out double that was brought across home plate by the proceeding batter’s home run.

With the lead still in tact after the home run, the senior pitcher for UK was able to maintain her composure in front of her hometown crowd to strikeout the next two batters to secure the victory for UK.

The UK offense’s 10 hit night was led by Kara Dill’s 4-for-4 performance.

She opened the game with a single that was backed up by a single from the bat of senior Brittany Cervantes, but the Cats’ problem of leaving runners stranded in scoring position plagued them yet again after both advanced a base on a passed ball and no one drove them in.

UK returns to SEC play Friday when they travel to Auburn for a three-game series that begins at 7 p.m. EST.
