Quick recap: Cats swat pesky LSU Tigers 60-51

Key player: Freshman forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist’s relentless style of play showed through from start to finish for the Cats. In trouble in the first half, Kidd-Gilchrist led the way with several cuts to the basket that contributed to his 10 points and 7 rebounds. Consistency showed in the second half as he aided in a 13-2 run began by sophomore Terrence Jones. Kidd-Gilchrist would finish the game with 19 points, 9 rebounds, and an assist, block and steal.

Turning point/key stretch: Trailing 35-30 with 16 minutes remaining in the second half, freshman Anthony Davis got a steal that ended with Terrence Jones receiving the ball for a dunk from senior Darius Miller. Another dunk, tip-in and series of free throw’s from Jones took the Cats on a 9-0 run that would put them ahead 39-35; a lead they wouldn’t look back on.

The good: Anthony Davis’ foul trouble in the first half that limited his offensive production to one point and six rebounds was once again overcome. Following the run sparked by Jones in the second half, Davis took over. He would finish the game with 12 points, 14 rebounds and six block, many of which came under the ten minute mark.

Stat of the game: The reason the Cats allowed LSU to hang around for much of the game was due to their overwhelming amount of turnovers. UK finished with 19 total turnovers, nine being steals from Tigers’ Andre Stringer and Anthony Hickey that resulted in easy baskets on fast-breaks.

What’s next: With their 60-51 win over LSU in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament, UK will await the winner of Florida (22-9, 10-6 SEC) and Alabama (21-10, 9-7 SEC) at 3:30 p.m. EST from New Orleans Arena. Their semifinals matchup will take place Saturday at 1 p.m. EST time on the SEC Network. The Cats have defeated each team this season with their most recent being over Florida on March 4, 74-59.
