Quick recap: Cats advance with 81-66 win over WKU

Key player: UK head coach John Calipari may be getting the version of sophomore Terrence Jones that he has wanted to see all season long. Coming off of a strong performance in the SEC Tournament, Jones was key to the Cats’ victory over Western Kentucky with 22 points and 10 rebounds. His 22 points came from dunks, lay-ups and jumpers that resulted in his 9-13 shooting for the game. His presence was also felt on the defensive end with the use of his size against the opposition that often led to a bad shot.

Turning point/key stretch: While the Cats had already began to pad a pre-half lead, a ferocious putback dunk by Terrence Jones sparked a Cats run that blew the game open.

The good: UK was able to rebound from a loss in the SEC Championship Game by coming out of the gates strong against WKU. Despite allowing the Hilltoppers to creep their way back into the game following an early 10-0 run to start the game, UK was able to distance themselves from their opponent on their way to a comfortable victory featuring many wide-open, fan pleasing dunks.

Stat of the game: The Cats shot 55.6% on the game thanks to their ability to easily get to the basket and convert on easy opportunities against the less-skilled WKU frontcourt.

What’s next: Following their 81-66 win over the Hilltoppers, UK will await the winner of 8 seed Iowa State and 9 seed Connecticut, which follows the Cats’ game on TBS at 9:20 p.m. EST. Tip-off for the game on Saturday is yet to be determined.
