UK baseball falls to No. 2 in rankings

Despite its series win at Arkansas over the weekend, the UK baseball team fell to No. 2 in the Collegiate Baseball weekly poll on Monday.

The Cats’ 12-0 loss to Louisville on Wednesday combined with new No. 1 LSU’s sweep of Alabama likely swayed the pollsters.

The Cats remained No. 3 in the Baseball America poll and fell one spot to No. 3 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll.

UK (32-5, 11-4 SEC) and LSU are tied for the best conference record in the SEC.

The top two teams in the nation will face each other this weekend in Lexington.

But before that, the Cats take on the University of Cincinnati at Cliff Hagan Stadium on Tuesday.

UK beat the Bearcats on the road last month, 10-7. Since that game, UC has a 4-12 record, losing each Big East series it has played.

The team ranks in the top-10 nationally in nearly every offensive category, including hits, runs, slugging percentage, doubles and on base percentage. This year’s batting average at this point in the season is .317

Tuesday’s game against UC will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
