This weekend, people around the world are going to be attending dance parties to help find a cure for breast cancer.

Campus Recreation will be hosting a two hour Zumba-thon Sunday with all proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Participants will go to the Seaton Center Gym to purchase donation tickets, $5 for students who bring their UK ID and $10 for the public.

It is recommended to arrive earlier than the 6 p.m. start time because the program will begin on time, said Julia Buchanan, a graduate assistant at Campus Recreation.

The first 75 people to arrive at the event will be entered to win door prizes, including items such as workout gear, Buchanan said.

The event, Party in Pink, is a global affair with parties in Russia, Australia, Ireland and many other countries.

This is the first time UK Campus Recreation will host a Zumba-thon.

With Zumba being one of the more popular fitness classes in Campus Recreation, they thought it would be a great way to become involved in breast cancer awareness month, Buchanan said.

The event is not just for students and experienced dancers, anyone can join.

“Everyone participates together,” Aly Nonn, group fitness instructor, said. “Zumba is easy to catch on to.”

There will likely be a break about halfway through the program, but if a participant needs to they can take more breaks throughout, Nonn said.

The event will give recognition to those who are currently fighting, have survived or passed away from breast cancer.

In addition to philanthropy of the event, there are fitness benefits as well.

According to an article on AceFitness.org, Zumba burns an average of 9.5 calories per minute, that is 570 calories for an hour.

It is important to remember that the rate of calorie burn depends on the person and the intensity at which they are participating, Nonn said.

Nonn also said Party in Pink is a good way to see different styles of Zumba and Zumba instruction.

“It’s definitely going to be a lot of fun… It’s a great workout and all the money is going to a good cause,” Buchanan said. “Wear pink and bring your friends.”
