Hairstyles have been the feature accessory in countless runway shows across the world, but one style that’s easy to mimic on a day-to-day basis is the ponytail.

Glamour.com recently posted about new ways to wear a beachy ponytail. Their tips are just what we need, because ponytails are the essence of every college girl.

It’s tricky having to deal with morning frizz when you’re running late for class and still want your hair to look semi-nice.

These are some tips from Glamour, as well as personal experience, since I’ve spent four years trying to discover how exactly to make a typical ponytail look fashionable.

First, curl your hair at night, when most of us have more time, and throw it back in the morning.

The curls will have relaxed once you’ve slept on them. And if you comb through leftover ringlets with your fingers, your hair will have a nice, wavy style.

Brighten up your pony with hair ties. Francesca’s and Anthropologie have brightly colored elastics that will give your hair a pop, but won’t leave a crease.

Other hair accessories, such as jeweled bobby pins, are available at Walgreens.

Ulta is the place to find hair products. It carries “Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray,” which is the cheapest beach spray I’ve found. It works best when sprayed into hair that is still slightly wet.

Scrunch the product into your hair and let it dry. For curly hair, this product will define curls and keep flyaways and frizziness under control. For straight hair, it will create a more piecey texture, like you just got off the beach (who would have thought)! Try teasing the root of the ponytail for a full, thicker looking pony.

Another idea is adding a braid. When you pull your hair back, the braid will accent the rest of your ponytail. You can also try using hair chalk to make the braid a different color and really make it stand out.

Other ways to pull your hair up are topknots and buns.

Messy topknots work well because they keep your look more natural.

If your hair tends to get loose and fall out of the knot, try a sock bun.

These are simple, require minimal resources and make your hair look great when it’s up and when you take it down.

All you need to do is cut the toe off a tube sock and roll it up so it looks like a doughnut. Then just pull the tip of your ponytail through the hole in the sock and roll your hair down around the sock until you have a flawless bun.

This is perfect if you need to go to class and then to Keeneland or out that night, because when you take the sock out, your hair will be full of loose curls.

Try all these styles and liven up your hair. With these simple tips, you’ll still look good when you roll out of bed and need to rush to class.
