UK men’s soccer (1-1-0) suffered its first defeat of the season, 1-0, against East Tennessee State University (1-1-1) on Thursday.

After a scoreless first half, ETSU freshman defender Thibault Civalier scored the lone goal of the match in the 47th minute, after the Buccaneers placed a corner kick in the box.

UK senior goalkeeper Jack Van Arsdale deflected the initial shot on goal, but  Civalier was there to put in the rebound.

UK was unable to answer the goal, as ETSU held a 10-5 advantage in shots taken.

The Cats will look to rebound from the loss when they return to Lexington to take on Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne on Sunday at noon.

Under second-year head coach Johan Cedegren, the Cats are attempting to build off of last year, when they made an NCAA Tournament appearance for the first time since 2003.

UK senior forward Tyler Riggs has 23 goals during his collegiate career, which places him fifth all-time in most goals scored at UK. Riggs had seven goals during the 2012 season, but he remains scoreless this season.

Cats senior goalkeeper Jack Van Arsdale is also working his way into the UK record books, as he holds sixth place in career goals against average at 1.21.

Van Arsdale started the final 15 games in the goal last year, and earned all-conference accolades after blanking Louisville on Sept. 14.

Van Arsdale was in goal against the Buccaneers on Thursday in his first start of the season.

IPFW is seeking its first win of the season, after settling for a 2-2 tie with Northern Kentucky University on Aug. 30 and falling to the University of Dayton, 4-2, on Sept. 1.

The Mastodons will take on Loyola University Chicago on Friday before traveling to Lexington.
