UK football earned a verbal commitment late Tuesday night from 6-foot-2, 210-pound defensive back Michael Mathis.

Mathis, a sophomore safety from Kilgore Community College, is the 24th commitment for the UK football Class of 2014. He earned a 2-star ranking from Rivals.com.

Chris Fisher of 24/7 Sports reported the news. Fisher also noted that UK cornerbacks coach Derrick Ansley was the one that recruited Mathis to UK.

Mathis will look to strengtehn a defensive secondary that gave up 271 yards through the air to Western Kentucky University last Saturday.

At his Monday press conference, head coach Mark Stoops was asked for his assessment the secondary in the loss against WKU.

“Not good enough,” Stoops said. “We need to improve. We did not play good enough in a lot of positions, but we played poorly in the secondary.”
