Increase in depression among college students

Madison Rexroat

A 2013 survey by the American Psychological Association found that one-third of college students have experienced depression that affected their schoolwork. Since then, there has been a steady increase of students reporting mental health struggles.

College students, in particular, are at risk for mental health issues like depression or anxiety due to a unique mix of factors almost exclusive to college life. These factors include alcohol use, risky behavior, possible sexual assault, and of course the academic stresses of demanding courses, internships and extracurricular activities.

Most colleges have mental health resources available to students to help them understand and manage their anxiety or depression. Click here to learn about the UK Counseling Center on campus.
