College students nearly die after caffeine overdose

Two college students at Northumbria University in England nearly died after a medical trial went terribly wrong.

The trial, meant to test the effects of caffeine on exercise, was conducted by inexperienced staff who injected the students with 30g of caffeine instead of what was supposed to be 0.3g. That’s the equivalent of 300 cups of coffee at once, nearly double the “fatal” caffeine limit of 18g. The error was reportedly due to a typo in a text message between the researchers.

The students were hospitalized and received dialysis. Each lost about 20 lbs but have almost recovered fully.

The university, on the other hand, was fined £400,000 (over $500,000) for health and safety violations, as well as victim surcharges.
