Tennessee bill could provide free college for older adults

A new bill that would make free two years of community college for those 24 and over is under review of the state Senate in Tennessee.

The program, called Tennessee Reconnect, follows the earlier Tennessee Promise initiative which gives access to two years of community college to those who graduated high school after 2015. Tennessee Reconnect will go into effect in the fall of 2018, giving those who graduated before 2015 the same opportunity.

The new bill is part of a larger effort to have at least 55 percent of working age Tennessee residents earning a post-high school degree by year 2025. That number has already increased from 33.8 percent in 2013 to 38.8 percent today.

The cost of Tennessee Reconnect is expected to be $11.2 million per year but will be funded by the lottery for education account (not taxpayers).
