No. 3 Kentucky rifle (11-2, 5-1) came up short against the top ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (13-0, 5-0).
The final score in the matchup was 4,749-4,716 WVU as it dominated most of the event both in smallbore and air rifle competition.
Starting out, West Virginia came out flying in the smallbore round, just getting an edge on the Wildcats with 19 more points in that region.
The Mountaineers put up a strong 2,358 score on the board, with key contributors of Gavin Barnick, Ashlyn Blake and Camryn Camp. In air rifle, they posted a 2,391. West Virginia had more center shots as well, 369-303.
Some of Kentucky’s top scorers consisted of Sam Adkins and Sofia Ceccarello, who both generated a decent number of scores to keep themselves in range.
With the result, Kentucky wrapped up the competition and regular season. Up next, the Wildcats will compete in the NCAA qualifier matchup against Morehead State on Feb. 22.
West Virginia, on the other hand, continued its perfect season, improving to 13-0 and 5-0 in GARC conference play. It will also play in a qualifying matchup before postseason play.
