The dominos continued to fall as Kentucky football wide receiver Dane Key announced he was entering the transfer portal.
“After much prayer and reflection, I’ve made the decision to enter the transfer portal for my final year,” Key said in a statement posted to his Instagram.
The junior committed to Kentucky as a four-star player out of Frederick Douglass High School in Lexington.
Key opted to stay home as he chose the Wildcats over Oregon, South Carolina and Michigan. He followed in his father Donte’ Key’s footsteps by dawning the blue and white as his dad played defensive end for Kentucky from 1992-95.
Football runs in the family as his brother, Devon, played safety in the NFL for the Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos.
It was an interesting career for Key at UK as he played with three different quarterbacks and three different offensive coordinators during his tenure.
Nonetheless, Key finished with 1,870 receiving yards, which is fifth in program history, along with 14 touchdowns in his 38 games.
In his freshman campaign, Key and quarterback Will Levis, now of the Tennessee Titans, connected for 519 yards and six touchdowns.
Then, with former Baltimore Ravens practice squad member Devin Leary as his quarterback, Key finished his sophomore year with 636 yards and six touchdowns.
During the 2024 campaign with Brock Vandagriff under center, Key finished with a career-high and team leading 715 yards, which led the team. Key also hauled in two touchdowns this season.
Key posted his career-high of 145 yards earlier this season against Ohio and his final catch at Texas as he was catchless against Louisville.
The Cats’ star wide receiver will look to post another career high like he has in the three seasons he spent at Kentucky wherever he decides to finish out his college career.
