No.10 Kentucky volleyball is set to take on 5-2 SMU in the SMU Doubletree Invitational at the Moody Coliseum on Friday at 8 p.m. ET.
SMU is coming off a year where it won the American Athletic Conference and lost to eventual champions Texas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Mustangs recently moved to the ACC for all sports.
It has been a wild year for the Mustangs as they have swept No. 5 Nebraska and beaten No. 18 Baylor in five sets on the road. Surprisingly, despite SMU beating teams of that caliber, the Mustangs also have had some really perplexing losses such as those to unranked Hawaii and Loyola Marymount (LMU).
SMU has a three-headed attack this season. Naya Shime leads the team with 86 kills while Maya Tabron and Jamison Wheeler both have over 60 kills each with Tabron having 78 and Wheeler adding 64 herself.
On the other hand, Kentucky is looking for its first big win of the season after getting reverse swept against Penn State Friday.
Kentucky has handled business against the “weaker teams,” going 5-0 against non-top 25 teams, but hasn’t been able to get a win against a top team yet in this early year.
Kentucky has a three-headed monster of its own with Brooklyn DeLeye up front having 99 kills on the season. In the back, Molly Tuozzo also leads the team with 90 digs while one of the best setters in the country, Emma Grome, has 261 assists.
Depending on results, Kentucky will play either No. 7 Purdue or Houston the following day to conclude the tournament. The two winners will face off in the championship and the two teams that lost will also face off.
Fans are surely in for an exciting volleyball weekend so, with the stage set, the game will be aired on ACC Network Extra at 8 p.m. ET.
