Kentucky football (1-0) bested the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (0-1) by a score of 31-0.
The Wildcats entered the matchup looking to avenge a loss from the last time the two teams squared off over a decade ago.
Due to multiple lightning delays, the off season was extended by two hours and 10 minutes as the game did not kickoff until 10:05.
When play began, the offense made their season debuts first. The drive started off well, but did not end that way as Brock Vandagriff tossed an interception.
Following the turnover, the defense got their first chance of the year.
With a chance at redemption, the offense retook the field.
The defense returned to the field with a lead looking to build upon the turnover from their first series.
Unlike their last drive, the Wildcats were unable to convert this turnover into points which lead to a Wilson Berry punt.
The Wildcat defense stood tall to force a Southern Miss punt which only travelled 23 yards, setting up the offense on the Golden Eagles 32-yard line.
The Wildcats defense continued to roll by forcing another Golden Eagles punt that gave the offense an opportunity to build upon their lead.
When facing another fourth down, the Golden Eagles decided to gamble by attempting a fake punt which the Wildcats were prepared for and stopped. Their reward for the stop was great field position for the offense.
The Golden Eagles did not attempt any offense and decided to let the clock run out to end the first half.
Due to the delays, halftime was abbreviated.
Coming out of halftime, the Wildcats defense forced another punt which gave the offense their first chance of the second half.
This turned out to be the final snap of the night as lightning was detected within eight miles of the stadium which stopped play and ended of the game after both teams agreed on termination.
With the win, Kentucky will welcome the South Carolina Gamecocks into Kroger Field on Saturday, Sept. 7, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 ET.
