Volleyball looks to build off defensive success

The No. 24-ranked UK volleyball team will travel to Cincinnati on Friday, Sept. 18 for a regional match-up against Xavier at 6 p.m.
The Cats, who are now 5-5 on the season, competed in the Shocker Volleyball Classic last weekend finishing the tournament 1-2. Despite the outcome, the Cats had some impressive play from the team.
Sophomore outside hitter Sharay Barnes had a career night against the Shockers with 16 kills, nearly tripling her previous record. Sophomore duo Kaz Brown and Emily Franklin both tied their season highs in blocks as well as senior Morgan Bergren and freshman Anna Nyberg.
Sophomore Darian Mack and Brown were placed on the Shocker Volleyball Classic All-Tournament team.
Xavier traveled to Tallahassee, Fla. last weekend to compete in the Aloft Seminole Invitational where they went 2-1 in the tournament beating Florida A&M and Coastal Carolina. The No. 19 host Florida State swept the Musketeers to end their tournament play.
Senior Makayla Agin from New Washington, Ohio posted a match-high 12 kills against the Seminoles. Redshirt Junior Sofia Peterson from Melbourne, Fla. added 10 kills and four blocks in the loss. XU is now 4-5 on the season after the tournament.
The Cats and the Musketeers return to action this Friday and will battle it out in the Cintas Center. They then play in-state rival Louisville on Friday at Memorial Coliseum.
