Live karaoke on campus

With popular video games like “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band,” anyone can put themselves in the position of a rock star while they pretend to play some of rock music’s greatest songs.

UK students can take that rock star fantasy to a new level Thursday at the Student Activities Board’s Live Band Karaoke, which starts at 7 p.m. in the Cat’s Den.

Live Band Karaoke, lets students become the lead singer for some of the most popular rock songs, like regular karaoke.

“This is something different than normal karaoke,” said Mallory Johnson, SAB director of campus life. “This kind of event will attract all different types of people.”

The band knows the music to over 200 of the greatest rock songs, along with some other genres, Johnson said. The band members will also provide back-up vocals to create a real rock concert experience.

The audience will also be able to participate by voting on their favorite karaoke singer. Johnson said ballots will be provided to keep track of the audience favorites.

The student winner will win their own karaoke machine, Johnson said.

This is the first time the Live Band Karaoke event will be hosted at UK. Johnson said SAB wanted to provide karaoke events to every student, not just the 21 and over crowd.

“Karaoke is usually popular, but there is not really a place to (participate) unless you’re over 21,” she said.

Earlier in the semester, SAB hosted “Grease! Karaoke,” which was devoted to songs from the musical “Grease.” Since the karaoke event was so successful, SAB’s Campus Life wanted to host a similar event, Johnson said.

“Live Band Karaoke” will last until around 8:30 p.m., when the audience favorite will be announced. Johnson said refreshments also will be provided during the event.

Anyone who has dreamt of being a lead singer for a rock band stop by the Cat’s Den Thursday between 7p.m. and 8:30p.m. during Live Band Karaoke to feel like a rock star.
